The Executive Order on the Preservation of Ilulissat Icefjord
In 2003 the Ilulissat Icefjord was classified as a protected area, and it is subject to the Executive Order on the Preservation of Ilulissat Icefjord. It takes its point of departure in the special values represented in the area, and establishes a framework for the future use and protection of the area.
The purpose of the Executive Order on the Preservation of Ilulissat Icefjord is to protect the natural beauty of the Icefjord, as well as the area’s natural and cultural history, and other natural values. The preservation must contribute to the protection of the Icefjord against wear and tear.
There Is Still Room for Most Activities
The protection of the Icefjord is established in such a way that it, if at all possible, allows for the practice of traditional activities in the area. This means for instance that there are no restrictions on sealing and fishing as long as you comply with the regular legislation. It is also still allowed to pick berries and cook on heather fires. The protection also regulates snowmobile traffic, access to particularly vulnerable areas, the pitching of tents, and sailing.
Special Rules for Sermermiut
The previous settlement of Sermermiut is also protected via the legislation protecting ancient monuments. It is not allowed to dig, open or in other ways destroy ancient monuments like pit shed ruins or Inuit graves. From the first of April to 31 October visitors are only allowed to use the track bridge when visiting Sermermiut.
Increased Surveillance
Above and beyond the protection, the municipality has increased the surveillance of the following activities in the World Heritage Area:
Helicopter flight
Snowmobile traffic
Tourist cabins
Camping grounds for tents
Waste disposal
The increased control in the area ensures that the rules established in the Executive Order on the Preservation of Ilulissat Icefjord are followed.
