Site Fee

UNESCO Site Fee from June 2025

Starting in June 2025, Avannaata Municipality will introduce a fee of 10 euros per visitor for access to the land area between Ilulissat town and the Icefjord, including the trail system with the yellow, red, and blue routes.

This one-time fee covers the visitor's entire stay in Ilulissat and helps fund the maintenance of trails, boardwalks, and daily supervision of the area. As part of the fee, visitors will also gain access to a 30-minute audio guide that provides insights into the area's natural and cultural history.

Why introduce the fee?

Since 2004, the UNESCO World Heritage Office has been funded by the municipality’s taxpayers. This has enabled the development of informational materials, trail markings, boardwalk construction, and the employment of Park Rangers to keep the area clean and well-maintained.

With increasing numbers of tourists, we believe it is now reasonable for visitors to contribute to protecting and preserving this unique World Heritage site.

Fee applies to the area close to Ilulissat

It is important to clarify that the Site Fee covers access to the entire land area between Ilulissat town and the Icefjord – not just the trails. This means that payment is required regardless of whether visitors choose to walk on the marked paths or beside them.

How to pay?

  • A ticket machine will be installed at the Icefjord Centre parking lot.
  • An online payment system will be available for both individual visitors and tour operators.
  • We expect the online ticket platform to open at the end of April 2025.
  • Staff from the Icefjord Office will conduct ticket inspections throughout the entire area.

Important: Residents of Greenland, individuals under 18, and school groups on study trips are exempt from the fee.

We appreciate your understanding and support for this initiative, which ensures that Ilulissat Icefjord remains a unique and well-preserved site for future generations.
